Health Volunteering Program for Medical Students needed for 1 to 3 months
Opportunity Description: Within this program, volunteers make a genuine contribution to staff working within Peruvian's hospitals, health clinics – medical centres and NGOs. Volunteers are needed to assist the populations residing in the poorest urban and rural areas. What kind of skills do I need? Volunteers must posses some proof of healthcare certification, such as an ID as a medical student, EMT or paramedic certification, or nursing or physician's credentials. It's necessary to have an intermediate Spanish level in order to give local people as much help as possible. Your role as a volunteer Depending on your medical experience and Spanish language skills you may be asked to assist with various procedures such as suturing wounds, giving vaccinations, helping with taking vital signs of patients, being involved in the daily procedures of medical centres – observing or directly providing various sorts of assistance to existing doctors and nurses. Volunteers may also be expected to assist in maintaining files, providing assistance to the reception desk as well as in nurseries, routine patient check-ups, measure blood pressure, body temperature, record patients' height, weight, and more. You can work in different areas and topics: - Public Medical Centers - Public Hospitals - Health Campaigns - Geriatric centers - sexual health, personal hygiene, and family planning. IMPORTANT: We have to emphasize that our organisation does not offer any placement to volunteer as professionals; neither are permitted to perform major diagnoses or big surgical duties. Volunteers will assist doctors – usually within the capacity of an assistant. Working hours 4-5 hours/day - 5 days a week (volunteers are reminded to remain flexible) Spanish level Intermediate Locations available Cusco, Arequipa, Iquitos. Medical Internship in Cusco needed for 1 to 3 months
Opportunity Description: Medical Interns in this project will be paired with a full-time Nurse or doctor and work six days a week (Mon – Fri) 8:00am – 2:00pm. In special cases interns may work on weekends and evenings. Interns will shadow the nurse or doctor in their normal, daily routines and assist with professional responsibilities according interns medical background. VS offers Health Internship to Pre-med and Med Students only, because interns work in real life situations, and you not only learn skills that will come in handy in medical school (injections + sutures, weight, height) you learn how to stay calm and steady in the face of an emergency, following a Doctor /Nurse for a day. You can learn of the basic procedure with doctor-patient relations. The most rewarding experience is working firsthand with nurses and patients. This internship shows you that it is not just know-how that makes a good doctor, but also a certain degree of people skills and patience. Placed in small medical centers in Cusco, allows Pre med and med students to have a firsthand perspective of the disadvantages of the health care industry in developing nations. Those interns will have the opportunity to receive a basic health care during their internships. Dental Elective Program in Cusco needed for 1 to 3 months
Opportunity Description: The Dental Elective program is designed for those volunteers who wish to gain valuable knowledge and skills by working along with professional dentists. Volunteer work includes assisting the dentists in their tasks and helping in sterilization of supplies as well as doing hands on tasks depending their medical and experience background. The program is suitable only for dental students who want to gain hands on experience and skills before starting professional work. On certain occasions, volunteers also visit public schools and children kindergartens centers and teach the importance of oral hygiene. On a daily basis, the routine varies but volunteers usually work for 4-5 hrs in a day with evenings and weekends free to travel and explore. What to bring for your Dental Elective program 1.- 100 units of dental burs (different types) 2.- 01 complete kit of Stainless steel dental surgery 3.- 50 dental needle (different sizes) Program Information Program Requirements Volunteers must be 18 years or older at the beginning of the program. Volunteers in the dental program must be working or studying in the field of dentistry. Volunteers must bring their licenses, medical certificates, or school documents as proof. You need to have an Intermediate level of Spanish to enroll in this program. (Medical Spanish lessons are available at an extra cost). Project Location The project placements are located around the city of Cusco. Most of the volunteer projects are located at within close proximity to the accommodations (10-35 minutes using local transportation). During your Free Time Volunteers are free to visit and see places or do shopping during their free time. Cusco’s main attraction is Macchu Picchu where volunteers can stay for 1 or 2 days according to their budgets. Volunteers can explore nearest cities around Cusco, like Arequipa, Puno and Puerto Maldonado. (Weekends)
